ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Carole says that it seems as if she has been sewing, in some form or another, ever since her great-grandmother taught her simple stitches for handkerchiefs.  These lessons came with the stern admonition that if one's work wasn't the best that one could do, then there was no point in doing it.  Her years of sewing since have included needlepoint, cross-stitch, embroidery, and crewel, not to mention garment and home decorative sewing.  When she discovered the allure of quilting, however, all the other sewing endeavors "went by the wayside."

She made her first quilt in 1975, which by today's standards was considered the dark ages of the current revolution (and evolution) of quilting.  She was transfixed by the interplay of color, design, and geometry.  She learned that if the color and design "speaks to you," then there is a wonderful freedom to work "outside the box."

Since then, she has made over 475 quilts, both traditional and contemporary in design and fabric choices.  She continues to find new challenges in design and technique, with her real passion being hand-quilting.  In our very hectic and often over-scheduled lives, there is a calm that settles over one when the rhythm of working by hand becomes one's only activity.  It becomes a time for reflection, a time to watch something new being created, perhaps slowly, but always with a purpose in mind.  Such satisfaction!

ARTIST STATEMENT:  "Quilting has opened many doors for me in teaching, new friendships, travel and creative growth.  Quilts teach us about our history.  They remind us that women have always sought ways to bring a sense of beauty into their lives and their environments.  We share our quilts, we use our quilts "to death," we express ourselves in our quilts.  Our quilts remind us not only of the utilitarian need to supply warmth for survival, but that beauty is also needed for survival of the human spirit."
